Each tale Feng directs reaches for a climax and then jolts us back to Feng’s actual life, where strange things are happening around the production of her film. The oscillation between the visualization of her stories (the short films, themselves) and Feng’s reality (her struggles to keep the ship from sinking) feels similar to flipping through her mother’s photobook, the inspiration that pulls her along.
